The needless death of George Floyd has sparked unprecedented discussion about the connections between racism, police abuse, and health. In June, the Minnesota Legislature's People of Color and Indigenous (POCI) Caucus released a set of proposals designed to respond to these needs and advance meaningful reform. A special legislative session in June ended without substantive action on this agenda, but Gov. Tim Walz has called a second special session, to begin Monday, July 13, where these topics will be a significant focus. That means we have one more chance this year to make a difference!
JustUs Health exists because injustice exists. Our purpose -- to end health inequity -- cannot be achieved unless the brutality of racism is broken. Our commitment to those at the intersections of health and identity cannot be realized without confronting the deadly systems of oppression used against Black communities, Indigenous communities, and other communities of color.
For these reasons, we have endorsed the POCI Caucus' agenda and urge swift action to adopt it. We strongly encourage you to contact the Legislature to express support, particularly as it prepares to come together next week.
The key people to contact are in the Senate: Majority Leader Paul Gazelka (R) and Minority Leader Susan Kent (D). We also encourage folks to reach out to their own specific Representative or Senator; if you don't know who those people are, the Legislature's District Finder can help.
Finally, if you are not receiving action alerts from JustUs Health for information on developments related to advocacy for health equity, please take a moment to sign up and be sure to click on "JustUs Health Advocacy Network" (and, of course, anything else that interests you!). There will definitely be more opportunities to make a difference to come!
