Finding Connection through the Minnesota AIDSLine

As the state of Minnesota's only HIV resource and referral line, the Minnesota AIDSLine fills a vital role for many. AIDSLine is often the first connection to services for people who are newly diagnosed. People with a new HIV diagnosis can sometimes carry a heavy burden of fear and concern. They have questions that cut to the core of their well-being such as: “Am I going to die?” or “Can I have children?” After a new diagnosis, there is often a hunger for information and answers to questions about medication or doctors. The Minnesota AIDSLine is there for them no matter what, providing a real human connection at a stressful time.

When misinformation and stigma meet real people’s lives, the AIDSLine is there to help dispel rumors and address outdated information about HIV. They help individuals who are HIV-negative stay negative and help people living with HIV access the services they need.

The AIDSLine continues to innovate and expand the reach of its Quick Connect meetings so they can have more of an impact across the state, especially in greater Minnesota.

With the new infection rates stuck near 300 per year for the past 10 years in Minnesota, the AIDSLine is still a vital service to folks who are newly diagnosed, concerned they may have been exposed, or trying to connect to HIV-related care.

You can reach the Minnesota AIDSLine at 612-373-2437aidsline@justushealth.org, or text AIDSLine to 839863.

The Minnesota AIDSLine is staffed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

JustUs Health Announces New Aging Initiative

In December, JustUs Health announced that it will launch new initiatives focused on advocacy and support for elders in the LGBTQ community as well as those who are aging with HIV or AIDS.

“We plan to expand our programs, services, and advocacy as we move into 2020 to respond to the growing needs of older LGBTQ and HIV-positive Minnesotans. These communities need support to build community connections, offer options for quality care, provide direct senior services, and advocate for sound public policy.” -Jeremy Hanson Willis, JustUs Health CEO

This new aging initiative will focus on 4 primary areas:

  • Building Community Connections: reduce isolation that contributes to worsening health problems by working to build stronger social community among and for older LGBTQ and HIV-positive people.
  • Expanding Options for Quality Care: strengthen our training curriculum for community members and professional care providers to ensure LGBTQ and HIV-positive people have equitable access to a continuum of senior services in their community.
  • Advocating for Public Policy: organize and amplify the voices of LGBTQ and HIV-positive older adults to advocate for fair and equitable public policy.
  • Direct Senior Services: work with older adults to identify and fill gaps related to their needs through the addition of services which will center on areas the marketplace is not adequately providing.

Victory: Transgender teens get access to critical medications

In the summer of 2019, JustUs Health successfully completed a multi-year project to secure access to the medications Minnesota transgender teens both need and deserve. After many years, transgender teens on Minnesota Medical Assistance and MinnesotaCare at last will have access to blockers and hormones, which are recognized as the standard treatment for adolescents.

"Transgender teens on the Minnesota Medicaid program are now eligible for transition-related medications that had been routinely denied for years." You can read the full article here
